The Orient Express was a long-distance passenger train service created in 1883 by Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL). On 14 December 2009, the Orient Express ceased to operate and the route disappeared from European railway timetables, reportedly a "victim of high-speed trains and cut-rate airlines".The Venice-Simplon Orient Express train, a private venture by Belmond using original CIWL carriages from the 1920s and 1930s, continues to run from London to Venice and to other destinations in Europe, including the original route from Paris to Istanbul.

This is a review from a disappointed customer on TripAdvisor "It was on our bucket list to take the Orient Express from London to Venice. My parents had taken it 25 years ago & told me how wonderful it was. Well, it wasn’t. It is very very very expensive for what you get which isn’t much!!! The train is very old tight spaces & just plain uncomfortable. They only have one bar car for the 160 passengers which may hold 20 comfortably. Drinks are $20 apiece no matter what you order. The accommodation is so tight it is uncomfortable for two people. Food is good service ok. I wish someone would have told me to bring my motion sickness patch so I would not have gotten sick on my one day on the train. If someone tells you to go don’t go there are way better places to spend your money in Europe."

"We were due to travel Orient Express on April 18 Venice to London, and the trip was understandably cancelled. The delay in getting a refund wasn’t understandable. It took 3 weeks to get a refund. Airlines do that in 24 hours. And then they shortchanged us. They originally charged our credit card $5,591.90 but they refunded $5,241.63. After a complaint, they claimed the difference was due to the strength of the British pound....which is nonsense. Any exchange rate risk is THEIRS. So they admitted as much, but said I had to submit a request for the dollar difference to their reservations department. And that will take ANOTHER 3 weeks."
